What is Epoxy ?

Epoxy is a thermosetting polymer, which is a result of a reaction that takes place between epoxide "resin" and polyamine "hardener."

Properties of Epoxy

Epoxy is basically an adhesive with the properties as glue that sticks things together. Epoxy is also widely known as a copolymer, which is formed from two distinctive chemicals. As mentioned earlier, epoxy is a durable glue consisting of superior level of bonding properties. Epoxy comes in two component package. It is used to stick a number of metals, plastic, wood, etc. Epoxy-based materials will include coatings, adhesives and composite materials.

Characteristics of Epoxy

Generally epoxies are famous for their characteristics, such as adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, excellent mechanical properties and insulating properties. Epoxies with the characteristic of high thermal conductivity are also available.

Epoxies of different types are used for various purposes. Polyester epoxies are used as powder coatings. Bonded Epoxy Powder Coatings are used to protect steel pipes and fittings in the oil and gas industry and potable water transmission pipeline from corrosion. Epoxy coatings are used as primers in order to enhance the adhesion of paints.

Epoxy, due to its high adhesive nature, used in various construction fields. These adhesives are called structural adhesives. They are used in the construction of aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, boats, etc. Epoxy adhesives can be modified to suit various applications.
